Clear Benefits
Small class sizes – allow for a greater depth of subject matter, and opportunities for teachers to adjust lesson plans to children’s different learning styles. Research demonstrates both short- and long-term cognitive benefits to study in classes with smaller student/teacher ratios.
Multiple Field Trips – experiential learning benefits are immense. Each class takes several educational field trips (see Extracurricular Activities in What We Offer for a sample).
French Instruction – begins in Kindergarten and carries on through Grade 8
Music Instruction – begins in Kindergarten, then expands in Grade 1 to the Suzuki Violin program, and again in Grade 5 to the Band program. Music instruction in general, and String instruction in particular has been demonstrated to positively affect cognitive, emotional, physical and social development in children.
Integrated Technology – preparing our students for the future, technology is integrated into classroom life beginning in Kindergarten. A state-of-the-art technology lab is used by all students on a weekly basis, boasting a one-to-one ration of computers to students. Students in Grades 5-8 also benefit from daily SMART Board use in their classrooms.
Caring, Christian Environment – a positive attitude that sees children’s mistakes as opportunities for learning encourages children to take the risks necessary for learning and confidence building. This is the hallmark of the Love and Logic discipline program that is utilized at the school.
On-site Before and After School Care – with spaces reserved for BSLS students.
Free Supervised Lunch Program – support staff, along with students in Grades 7 & 8, provide lunch supervision, allowing all students to remain at school during the lunch hour at no additional cost to the parents.
Central Location – located just minutes from the Forks and downtown Winnipeg, BSLS is accessible from all sides of the city.
Family Atmosphere – Teachers and families encourage and support each other, and this is passed on to the students.
Multiple-grade classrooms - Research demonstrates that multi-level classrooms bring out the best in children as they learn to collaborate and build positive relationships.
Love and Logic - the staff at BSLS use the Love and Logic approach to empower students to think for themselves, take ownership of their actions, learn from the consequences and take advantage of the opportunities that boost their self-esteem. A mistake is viewed as another opportunity to help a child own his/her problem and learn respect and responsibility. Love and Logic is twice as effective and provides greater consistency when parents practice the techniques at home as well! Love and Logic seminars are offered for parents during the school year.
